After much anticipation, Tesla revealed the Cybertruck, a futuristic pickup truck with an unique and indestructible exterior design, at their Cybertruck launch event at the Tesla Design Studio in Hawthrone, California.
According to Elon Musk, the Cybertruck will feature an exoskeleton design, which essentially makes the entire vehicle exterior the frame. The entire shell will be made with their proprietary “Ultra-Hard 30X Cold Rolled Stainless Steel”, which is the same steel used on SpaceX’s spaceships. Elon Musk claims the steel will be able to resist significant damage including a round from small caliber weapons such as a 9mm bullet. The glass is also Tesla’s proprietary Armor Glass, which is a polymer layered composite glass which is also the same glass used on SpaceX’s spaceships as well. During the presentation however, Tesla had a small mishap during the demonstration of the Armor Glass when Tesla designer Franz Vol Holzhausen lobbed a steel ball at the window leaving a large crack in the glass. While the steel ball didn’t break through the glass, the cracks in the glass was clearly not something that was planned.
To power the Tesla Cybertruck pickup, Tesla will offer three engine types which offer differing levels of power and range. The Cybertruck trim levels are as follows:
All three models will also come with autopilot and have the option of upgrading to full self driving when it launches for $7,000. The Tesla Cybertruck will also feature a retractable sliding cover and an adaptive air suspension system which will allow the truck to increase or lower height at will. To demonstrate this functionality, Tesla also unveiled a fully electric ATV, which was able to drive up the ramp of the Cybertruck for easy loading.
The Tesla Cybertruck is now available for pre-order at the Tesla website for a $100 deposit. The Cybertruck is expected to begin its first deliveries in late 2021.
